Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #2 by Michael Conrad, Becky Cloonan, and Jen Bartel!
In Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #2 written by Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan with art by Jen Bartel, Wonder Woman and the Spectre are the last superheroes floating in the barren wasteland of empty space and each of them struggles with the meaning of their existence when there aren’t any people to save, impart the truth to, or avenge. The Spectre realizes that every action in his life was contingent on revenge. So long as there was something for him to avenge, he had a purpose. But now with nothing upon which to enact his vengeance and no act to fuel any vengefulness, he doesn’t know what to do. In fact, that’s why he decides to just sit and wait for Wonder Woman to find him. And as he waits, he comes to the morbid conclusion that his existence meant nothing.
Reality comes crashing down on Diana two-fold. As a goddess, she was an entity that others could believe in. But without these “others,” Wonder Woman finds herself asking, “What happens to a god when nobody is left to believe in them?” The same can be said of how she is the herald of truth. She may never explore what this means in thought, but she later finds Spectre and helps him grapple with his aforementioned struggles.
In the end, the final and most powerful act Wonder Woman bestows not only proves that the existence of others provides meaning to superheroes, but gives herself a purpose once more by imparting truth to the next generation after life begins anew even once she’s gone.
Wonder Woman realizes her fate by becoming a constellation that will bring hope, truth, and justice … to all others who gaze upon it. Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #2 is in comic stores now. Her adventures as a cosmic entity continue in DC Comics Infinite Frontier #0, which is also available now.
