The Mortal Kombat cast reacts to the movie’s recently released trailer. After 24 years, Mortal Kombat will finally return to the big screen (and HBO Max) in live-action form on April 16. The Simon McQuoid directed Mortal Kombat has been in the works since 2010, and with the promise of game-accurate Fatalities and a cast including some of the video game franchises most iconic characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Shang Tsung, and Liu Kang, die-hard fans were eagerly awaiting a more detailed look at the film.
Promotion for the film ahead of its April release is now seemingly in full-effect, with the trailer finally dropping last Thursday. Keeping in line with what the fans love so much about the franchise, the trailer saw bloody violence and a collection of brutal fatalities to close the trailer, and they also saw significant focus given to arguably the two most popular characters, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. So the reaction to the trailer has largely been positive for these reasons, and producer Todd Garner even noted he was brought to tears by fan reactions to the trailer. Now, fans have the opportunity to see the reaction of the cast of Mortal Kombat as they sat down and watched the spectacularly violent trailer.
Ludi Lin, the film’s Liu Kang, tweeted a video that shows a number of the cast members like Lin, Chin Han, Sisi Stringer, Joe Taslim, and Tadanobu Asano all coming together (virtually, of course) to watch the trailer. The cast’s excitement and amazement at what they have created are clearly visible, as throughout watching the trailer, Asano (Raiden) shows an almost childlike enthusiasm to different character reveals and action moments. After the trailer concludes, they all discuss various highlights throughout the trailer while praising director McQuoid’s vision, and Taslim (Sub-Zero) even leaves fans with a nice tease by saying, “There’s a lot in the movie they haven’t showed.” Also, before the video ends, Max Huang, who plays Kung Lao, gives his impressive piano version of the classic Mortal Kombat theme. Prior to the trailer release, the film’s star Lewis Tan released a message explaining how proud he was of the entire cast and crew of Mortal Kombat. In that message, he also highlighted the various obstacles they had to overcome to make the film. So seeing how overjoyed and emotional the cast is with the trailer is understandable, and their reactions are certainly merited. Josh Lawson, who plays Kano, also highlights in the video how difficult a Mortal Kombat story is to tell due to there being so many moving parts. Judging by the trailer, it looks like McQuoid and co. have successfully juggled the moving parts and zeroed in on the more popular elements of Mortal Kombat, like Sub-Zero, who will serve as the primary antagonist.
Although the trailer has, for the most part, raised anticipation for the April 16 release date – there have also been some complaints regarding the exclusion of Johnny Cage and making Tan’s character Cole Young the main protagonist of the film. However, McQuoid did mention that Cole Young’s inclusion does keep to the video games tradition of adding new characters. Whether or not Cole Young impacts the film in a negative way remains to be seen. But this new reaction video of the Mortal Kombat cast will certainly help continue to boost excitement, for the film’s premiere and all that’s to come.
