TMNT Last Ronin: Michelangelo Honors His Brothers in The Best Way

Warning! Spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #2 below

With Michelangelo being the last surviving member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the Last Ronin’s dark future, he’s found a touching way to honor the legacy of his fallen brothers. In the new comic, the last Turtle not only becomes a master martial artist, but he also makes sure to carry the weapons of his fallen brothers.

Despite releasing only two issues thus far, IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is shaping up to be a classic story for the iconic comic characters. The series follows Michelangelo navigating through his own grief in a dark future where all of his family (except April O’Neil) has been killed by the descendants of Shredder. In a quest for vengeance, Mikey has teamed-up with April and her daughter Casey Marie Jones in order to fulfill his destiny and takedown Oroku Hiroto – the current leader of the Foot Clan.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz, Esau, & Isaac Escorza, Michelangelo is seen fighting Foot Clan soldiers while using multiple weapons – as Leonardo’s Katanas, Donatello’s Bo, Michelangelo’s Nunchaku, and Raphael’s Sai’s are all visible on his utility belt. In the series first issue, after getting injured in a fall, Michelangelo tries to kill himself with a broken Katana. Before doing so, he lays out each of his brother’s weapons along with their masks.

In the second issue, Michelangelo reveals to Casey Marie Jones that after the failed suicide attempt, the last Turtle turned to Splinter’s lessons (in his book) to become a master of all forms of martial arts and to adapt to every form of combat – including the use of his brother’s weapons. In mastering his training he found a path to restore his family’s honor and become the Last Ronin. If his brothers can’t be around, he can honor their legacies by using their weapons.

It’s quite a different path for a character originally referred to as a “party dude,” in the multiple TMNT cartoons. He’s completely transformed from the least serious, fun-loving Turtle of the group into focusing on martial arts and mastering his brother’s weapons. When it comes to honoring his brothers, there’s no better way for him to keep their legacies going by using their iconic weapons while trying to get revenge for their deaths. Michelangelo becoming the Last Ronin is the best way he can respect the memories of his brothers and ensure their tragic deaths mean something. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is in stores now.
