Mary Kubica’s novel The Good Girl is ripe for a Gone Girl-style movie but is the book-to-screen adaptation still happening? Ever since Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel Gone Girl got the big-screen treatment by David Fincher in 2014, there’s been a spate of fellow female-focused thrillers getting adaptations too. Both Paula Hawkins’ The Girl On The Train and Darcey Bell’s A Simple Favor have been made into movies, while Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies and Gillian Flynn’s debut novel Sharp Objects have been adapted for the small screen.
Bestselling author Mary Kubica’s debut novel The Good Girl is the latest female-driven thriller to get optioned by Hollywood. Published in 2014 by Harlequin imprint Mira Books, The Good Girl centers on Mia Dennett – an art teacher from a prominent Chicago family who is mysteriously kidnapped but has no memory of the event when she’s rescued. The book keeps readers on their toes with a timeline that shifts from before Mia’s abduction to after her rescue and multiple points of view told from characters including Mia’s distraught mother Eve, her kidnapper Colin Thatcher and Gabe Hoffman – the detective investigating the case.
With its focus on a kidnapping, The Good Girl has naturally been compared to Gone Girl. That said, The Good Girl sets itself apart from Flynn’s novel with a unique take that caught the eye of production company Anonymous Content which picked up the rights to bring the book to the big screen in 2015. But is The Good Girl movie still happening? Here’s what we know.
Unfortunately, Anonymous Content’s option on The Good Girl movie expired a few years ago. However, this presented an opportunity for Grey Matter Productions and Topic Studios who in 2018 announced their plan to turn The Good Girl into a TV show with Israeli writer-director Oren Moverman (The Dinner) set to adapt it.
Like Gone Girl and The Girl On The Train, The Good Girl book employs a nonlinear narrative that might translate well to the small screen. As of yet, though, it’s not known how the plot of The Good Girl TV show will unfold nor who it will star or when it will air.
While it could be some time before The Good Girl finally makes it to the small screen, several other Kubica books are also getting adaptations in the meantime. In 2019 Netflix acquired the rights to turn Kubica’s most recently published novel The Other Mrs. into a feature film and just last year Black Bear Television nabbed the rights to adapt her upcoming book Local Woman Missing into a TV series.
