Snyder Cut Trailer Hints Justice League Joker Works With Knightmare Batman

The latest trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League hints at an alliance between Ben Affleck’s Batman and Jared Leto’s Joker. The Dark Knight and Clown Prince of Crime will be reunited in less than a month. After their brief encounter in 2016’s Suicide Squad, fans will soon see Batman and Joker on-screen once more. Initially, Joker was never part of the original plans for the Snyder Cut, hence why it was such a surprise when Leto’s return was revealed last year. After his debut in the DCEU in 2016, Joker has oddly not been in any further films that are part of that universe, so it became a massive deal that not only was Leto reprising the role, but that it would be for the highly anticipated Snyder Cut.

It remains to be seen how much Joker is actually in the HBO Max release, but promotional material has teased that he’ll have a good chunk of screentime. One of the big elements that Snyder introduced to the DCEU was the Batman Knightmare element, a timeline where Darkseid has successfully invaded Earth. Not only are several members of the Justice League seemingly dead, but Superman is now under the influence of the Anti-Life Equation. It didn’t take long before it was unveiled that Joker would be crucial to some of the aspects of the Knightmare saga. After having seen his official future look, the trailer has now given a better clue to what the laughing maniac will be up to in the Snyder Cut.

The latest trailer for Justice League ends with a massive tease to Joker in the Knightmare timeline as he converses with Batman. Based on his energy alone and how he engages with the Caped Crusader, it seems even more likely that Joker and Batman are allies in the future. Even though they would never be on the same team in the present time, if forces from another planet were to conquer Earth, Joker and Batman would be forced to put their differences aside. It is still unclear how much impact Darkseid’s invasion has had personally on The Joker. Did Harley perhaps die early on and that is why Joker is willing to take on the New God? Or does he simply wish to restore order — and rebuild his crime empire, of course.

But the trailer makes it clear that in some way or another, Joker and Batman are on the same side, even if it’s just temporary. The fact that Joker helps steal a mother box and helps create Flash’s cosmic treadmill speaks volumes to how even he wants Apokolips defeated. From Joker’s perspective, he can’t wreak his usual chaos upon Gotham City if there isn’t a Gotham City to terrorize. It also says a lot about Batman that he would be willing to partner up with Joker. This is the same mad man that murdered Dick Grayson a.k.a. the first Robin as revealed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Despite that this is for the greater good to save the world, it’s still significant for the two characters to come together. Never has any past Batman franchise or other DC films ever depicted Joker and Batman pausing their rivalry for even a second. That is one of the big exciting aspects of the Snyder Cut because it will bring something new to Batman and Joker’s on-screen dynamic. It would be an even bigger treat if the film even shows the moment when they decided to become partners, but that remains to be seen. Regardless, it will be quite intriguing to see Batman and Joker as allies in Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max.
