The Caves & Cliffs update has added a lot of depth to Minecraft, and it has also added a bit more life to the farthest regions of the game. The Glow Squid is one such creature that has been introduced with the update, and it serves a greater purpose than what players had originally anticipated. While they aren’t the easiest mobs to locate, players may want to go out of their way to find Minecraft’s Glow Squid.
During the Minecraft Live 2020 event, the Minecraft community was asked to vote on three different mobs. Whichever mob received the highest number of votes would be the first of the three added to the game, and the Glow Squid miraculously won the vote over the Moobloom and Iceologer. While some players were upset about the addition of the Glow Squid, a recent snapshot of the 1.17 update showed how useful these fluorescent aquatic lifeforms can actually be. Here’s where players can find Glow Squid and what they can do with them.
While they are called Glow Squid, they don’t actually emit any light that affects the surrounding area’s light levels. Instead, their glow makes them easier to see from a distance. This comes in handy when trying to locate the Glow Squid since players will have to hunt for them in deep oceans or bodies of water in caves. While normal squid spawn regularly around the surface of the water, Glow Squid won’t be as easy to find. Players will want to have Respiration enchantments, water breathing potions, or other tools that will help players stay underwater longer.
Players can’t do anything with the Glow Squid itself unless they want an exotic pet. But if the player kills the Glow Squid they can collect its Glow Ink Sacs. This is a new item introduced in Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs update which works similarly to other dyes. However, it doesn’t change anything’s color. Instead, it can be applied to signs or item frames to make them glow. Players won’t notice a difference during the day or in areas with high light levels, but signs or item frames placed in dimmer areas will emit light making them easier to see or read. Players can use normal Ink Sacs on signs if they want to remove the glow effect but will have to craft entirely new item frames if they do not want the glow effect.
Minecraft is available now on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Nintendo Switch.
