Everything We Know About Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead

Updated: February 25, 2021

Zack Snyder has been a very busy man of late. The director’s next original film will be Army of the Dead, a zombie heist story headed to Netflix in the spring of 2021, and here’s what we know about the project so far. Snyder has always been a bit of a love him or hate him kind of director, with the caveat that the feelings tend to be very strong on either side. Some consider Snyder a visionary filmmaker whose every move is worth paying attention to, while others find his films to be excessively downbeat and overly indulgent with visuals.

To illustrate just how passionate Snyder’s followers are though, one need only look at the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement, which spent several years demanding the director’s original version of Justice League be released for all to see. Their persistence paid off, as Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally on its way in March 2021, and will debut as a marquee title on Warner Media’s new HBO Max streaming service. Snyder may have a ton of haters, but his lovers are just as devoted.

Way before Snyder got into the superhero game, however, he debuted with the 2004 remake of George Romero‘s classic Dawn of the Dead, which surprised just about everyone by being an enjoyable companion piece. Snyder will head back into zombie territory with Army of the Dead, which has been described as a spiritual successor to Dawn of the Dead while standing on its own. Here’s everything we know about the film so far, including release date, plot details, and more.

At one point, Army of the Dead seemed likely for a 2020 release on Netflix, as the film finished principal photography in 2019. However, the film underwent reshoots in 2020, with Tig Notaro being cast to replace comedian Chris D’Elia, who was previously accused of sexual assault. And so, fans had to wait until this year to see Zack Snyder‘s highly anticipated zombie film. Netflix officially set the release date for Army of the Date, which will be available to stream on May 21, 2021. The long-awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League will be released a couple of months ahead of his newest original project, officially making 2021 the year of Snyder.

There still really isn’t all that much known about Army of the Dead‘s story beyond the basic premise, which concerns a group of mercenaries that head into a zombie-infested Las Vegas to try and pull off the heist of the century. In a twist, the team is actually stealing the money on behalf of its owner, a casino magnate. Snyder has made clear that Netflix has allowed him complete creative freedom with Army of the Dead, so there should be no need for a Snyder Cut situation this time out. The film will be a pretty impressive action flick and Netflix execs seem to have enough confidence in the film to have already given the go-ahead for a prequel film and an anime series set in the same universe.

Confirmed character details for Army of the Dead are scarce. However, with the aforementioned reshoots, a new character was added in and will be played by comedian and actress Tig Notaro. This casting will effectively remove the character played by comedian and actor Chris D’Elia, who was accused of sexual misconduct involving underage girls. Playing Scott Ward, the lead mercenary is wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista, while Sweetbitter‘s Ella Purnell plays Scott’s daughter Kate. Consummate character actor Garett Dillahunt, Power‘s Omari Hardwick, and Luke Cage‘s Theo Rossi also dot the large cast.

The Army of the Dead trailer was officially released and can be watched above. The first teaser provides a bit more detail about what fans can expect from the film, including an incredibly grim and nearly empty Las Vegas. Bautista leads the cast as a horde of zombies attack casino-goers and more. It looks pretty exciting, with high-octane action sequences and shoot-outs. May can’t come soon enough.
